Delhi Chapter of ASI originated from Delhi Surgical Society
in 1979 through the efforts of greats of that
era namely Dr. K C Mahajan, Prof Atm Prakash,
Dr. Anand Prakash, Dr T J Agarwal and Prof N C
Madan. At the time of its inception Dr. T J Agarwal
was its first President and Dr. N C Madan its
first Secretary. These stalwarts laid the sound
foundation which has stood the test of time. The
chapter has organized annual conferences of the
Association of Surgeons of India every decade
since 1979. ASICON “88 conference coincided with
the Golden Jubilee of the ASI and was thus named
Golden Jubilee ASICON. The hugely successful conference
is annually commended during our annual conference
in the form of Golden Jubilee Oration. The millennium
conference of ASI, the ASICON 2000 resulted in
surplus resources with the state chapter. Under
the visionary guidance of Dr. KC Mahajan, the
Chapter set up ASICON Surgical Foundation for
Surgical Education and Research. The chapter organizes
annual conference regularly; these are keenly
awaited events on the surgical calendar of its
vast membership. The monthly clinical meetings
of the chapter provide an effective forum to the
surgical fraternity to not only discuss cases
but a forum to bond with one another and develop
lasting camaraderie. The chapter celebrates the
memories of legends like Dr. S K Sen, Dr. T J
Agarwal and Dr. K C Mahajan through orations and
a PG forum named after these stalwarts.
Currently the membership of the chapter stands
at more than 700. The chapter has been adjudged
best chapter of ASI on more than a few occasions.
There has been some exceptional contributions
of those stalwarts whose efforts have brought
the chapter to where it is. Dr. K C
Mahajan has been the patron of the
Chapter and has been closely associated with
its activities ever since. He has been the organizing
chairman of ASICON 1988, 2000, 2010 and had
hugely contributed to their success. He is the
founding chair of ASICON CME foundation and
the person who has laid the foundation of its
robust academic programme. We salute his contribution
biannually holding our PG Surgical Forum Intensive
Classroom sessions in his name. Dr.
T J Agarwal was the founding president
and later patron of the chapter. He was a legend
who popularized the activities and supported
the chapter’s activities during its formative
years when finances were precarious. The family
established an endowment in his memory and created
the corpus which takes care of annual Dr. T
J Memorial Oration.
Dr. N C Madan was the first
Honorary Secretary of the Chapter and laid the
solid foundation and formulated the constitution
the chapter, which with minor modification has
continued to provide guidance to the executive
governing it. He was closely associated with
Golden Jubilee ASICON 1988 and contributed to
its success in great measures.
It is satisfying to note that the current
generation of leaders are carrying forward the
agenda of the visionaries and adding their own
creativity on the way.
SURGICON, The annual conference
of the Delhi State Chapter has been organized
successfully for many years now. Each year has
seen participation of more delegates of the
surgical fraternity including those practicing
as super specialists like Endocrine surgeons,
Paediatric surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Surgical
gastroenterology, Onco-surgeons, Thoracic and
Cardiovascular Surgeons and Urosurgeons. Monthly
meetings held on a regular basis in around a
dozen teaching hospitals all over Delhi and
its overwhelming response is proof enough of
its growing popularity also among all the post
graduate students and the surgical fraternity
at large. We hope to continue forward the rich
tradition in the times to come.
